Sylvia Earle: Guardian of the Sea (Lerner Biographies)
Published in Library Binding by Lerner Publications Company (September, 2000)
Author: Beth Baker

My (10-year-old) daughter brought this book to me with a request: "This is what I want to buy all of my friends for their birthdays this year!" She loved the sense of adventure and risk-taking that Beth Baker describes in this approachable biography of an American heroine. Baker's wonderful writing is complemented by terrific underwater photos of Earle in action. Baker's book captures qualities in Earle that many kids--boys and girls alike--will find inspiring. A terrific read-alone for 4th-7th graders; also an engrossing read aloud text.

A Realm of Possibilities Beneath the Sea
Kudos to Beth Baker for writing a book that is not only inspiring but informative and entertaining. Sylvia Earle, Guardian of the Sea, is a well written documentation of the life of a most interesting pioneer. Ms. Baker expertly captures the experiences of a woman, who plunged into the undersea world of exploration -- a field that has long been male dominated. Like Jacques Cousteau, Earle is curious about the wonders of the ocean, and undeterred about what her perceived role should be in the world, she successfully becomes a noted scientist, marine biologist and deep sea diver.

Her life is a shining example for all to strive and achieve their highest goals. It is of particular significance to young girls, who can read about Ms. Earle's pursuits and enter arenas that they might have thought were closed to them. Although the book is geared toward 9-14 year olds, it is an enjoyable read for all who have ever dreamed.

Inspirational Adventure
If you'd like your children to learn the rewards of perserving against great difficulties for what they believe in, the intrinsic value of the ocean and all living things, the adventure of Sylvia Earles life is an inspirational tale not to be missed. She was a true pioneer whose passionate quest for knowledge of the ocean and its inhabitants ran head on into societies reluctance for women to pursue professions beyond telecommunications and restuaranteurs(operators and waitresses). Author Beth Baker starts the book with Sylvia out of air, deep in the ocean, and keeps your attention throughout. This superbly crafted account, complete with color photos, is a delight for young readers.

This book was one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. It has so much to it that makes you want to read on and never put it down. I highly recommend that you buy and read this book. You'll love it.

A Wonderful Time Travel Story - one of the best
Well Madeline Baker does it again. A Whisper in the Wind is a story to ponder about over and over again. All the characters in this novel were colorful and interesting to read about. At times you felt the joy and pain the Native Americans have endured in their lifetime. A wonderful read. I couldn't put the book down.

Wintertide

Tremendous epic fantasy
Brona the healer claims the unborn child, conceived of violence, as hers. The child Khamsin is born during a storm of the century. Bronya raises the child teaching her the magic until Khamsin turns seventeen. The healer reads the runes interpreting them to mean that Khamsin must immediately marry. Though she does not want a man in her life as she is used to no one except Bronya, Khamsin makes a deathbed promise to her mentor to do so.

Khamsin marries, but her husband and his villagers do not trust her or her power. She is allowed to only heal the sick. As happened when she was conceived, raiders killed most of the villagers. Khamsin escapes, but now knows she must obtain the Orb from a powerful sorcerer and determine what will become of this magical artifact that has led to so many deaths by those who desire to misuse its power.

Fans of epic fantasy adventures will quickly understand why WINTERTIDE is a multiple award-winning novel. The key to the richly textured story line is the depth of the characters and the world that enables the audience to believe in magic especially in a young girl's heart. The plot never loses focus as master magician Megan Sybil Baker casts an enchanting spell that force a one sitting read and a geas to seek other works from this enchantress.

A Magical Fantasy
Wintertide won the EPPIE Award for Best Fantasy, and it's easy to see why! This is a great fantasy tale that includes magic, romance, and adventure. There's a great twist that surprised and delighted this reader. Definitely recommended if you like fantasy or even paranormal romance. The far-future sequel, An Accidental Goddess (a sci fi) is great too, and adds on to an already fascinating world of magic and mystery.

A magical fantasy journey!
WINTERTIDE is a highly imaginative, complex tale combining Science Fiction, Fantasy and Romance - although the hero and heroine are separated throughout most of the book, when they do finally come together it is a satisfying joining of two hearts and souls that belong together. I highly recommend WINTERTIDE to readers looking for a fast-paced, unusual, dark and dangerous story about sorcerers, wizards, demons, and the power of love to conquer all.

100 Hikes in Washington's North Cascades National Park Region: Mt. Baker Area, Ross Lake Nra, Pasayten Wilderness, Methow-Chelan

I can't wait to explore!
I've just purchased this book and I'm more than *delighted*! The photographs are ultimately enthralling, and the narration is so honest. I work for a non-profit striving to protect more public lands in Washington permenantly as Wilderness, and books like these that reach a large public audience and tell it like it is help us along our path to success... I love to hike and I love to see the areas that I hike in stay put! It's nice to be able to see which areas are protected and which are not before even exploring on one's own. BUY IT!

the essential guide
Sure, Harvey's opinionated, but it's excellent stuff. Nice, quick background on these amazing places, why they are still wild and protected, and just enough detail to get you in and out without giving away all the surprises. The best guide out there.

100 Hikes books are essential equipment in the PacNW
The interesting thing about the 100 Hikes series is how well it integrates with Fred Beckey's books. Ira and Harvey get you to the base of the peak; Fred gets you up it. The series go hand-in-hand. Some of the most valuable information in the whole series comes in the form of the forewards and introductions. While opinionated, the views expressed are those of someone who has spent a lifetime exploring, protecting and enjoying the areas treated by the books. The route descriptions are accurate (more or less), and the small maps are clear and understandable. If you don't have this book, go get it. You would do well, in fact, to get the whole series. NOTE: hikes 10, 14, 33, 70, and 79 are awesome.

Ace of aces, M. St. J. Pattle : top scoring allied fighter pilot of World War II

My Favourite Book
I first read this book about 16 years ago after my Dad gave it to me. I have read it about ten times since and still have it. I honestly do not think I will ever read a book again in my life that will have the same profound effect on me that this book accomplished. Everyone has someone who they look up to, Pat Pattle, to me is that person. If there is anyone who has any photos of Pat Pattle other than the general two published in books I would be most interested in getting a copy from them.

My Dad flew with him!
I do hope this book will be printed again. My Dad flew with "Pat" Pattle in 80 squadron in the Western Desert and was one of his best friends. The book cannot be faulted for accuracy as I gave my parents a copy some years ago and they read it avidly. My Dad, by the way, was "Old Man Evers ", so called because he was the oldest pilot on the Squadron. Enjoy the book and remember those brave lads.

this is the most exciting book ever.
this book the most intriging book because he was the youngest pilot ever to become the worlds ace of aces.

Great for classroom use!
This book is wonderful to use in the classroom with a variety of ages and academic levels! The exciting and FUN use of words and word rhythm is very helpful when teaching writing lessons. Reading this story is also a wonderful introductory activity for discussions on our society, our dreams and wishes for the future, and how to "fix" the problems we might see in the world! Superb example of children's literature!

Wendy wows with culinary tale for kids
Actually, I haven't read it yet. But I know it's got to be great because I grew up with Wendy in Ohio - we were in the same art classroom in high school. I've got to buy it!

A delightful tale about a baker who tries to make a world.
This engaging, magical book presents the story of an ambitious doughnut maker. Frustrated and bored, he decides to whip up a world. He begins by carefully studying everything from androids to sunshine, and then concocts a batter that includes ketchup, old socks, and other quirky ingredients. The baker struggles with many different variations of batter, and he stirs and cooks in countless creative, silly ways . . . until a final product emerges that will surprise and charm every reader.

"The Ambitious Baker's Batter" is suitable for children and adults of all ages. Like the best children's books, it is sophisticated enough to succeed on many different levels. The illustrations are detailed, imaginative, and entertaining. Most pages feature both primary and background art. Children (and their parents, too!) will enjoy discovering hidden treasures in these background drawings. Also, the book's illustrations are so evocative that children who can't yet read will be able to follow the story independently.

"The Ambitious Baker's Batter" is an ideal gift for the holidays, a time when children are fascinated by the mysteries and magic of baking.

The Print (Ansel Adams Photography, Book 3)
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (June, 1995)
Authors: Ansel E. Adams and Robert Baker
Average review score:

A must have in the age of digital
This book though dry and technical has plenty of information that is a must have for any aspirinf photographer who wishes to push their black and white print skills furhter. Given that digital camera sales are now out stripping analog cameras will this book still have relevence?

Another Excellent Black and White Photography Book
The last of a three book series, this volume provides comprehensive instructions detailing the developing process. Chapters on mounting and displaying photographs are at the books end completing the readers education. This book written by Ansel Adams, made famous for his B&W photographs, will disapoint any reader interested in the art of color photography. This three book collection is a must for any B&W photographer.

Cropping and Contrast Control: The Key Ingredients
Despite the heavy emphasis on chemical and paper, this book's essentially about cropping, contrast control, and presentation. These are the core topics you'll need to master even if you only do digital photos. All the better if you use PhotoShop, because it recreates the controls (like burning and dodging) of a darkroom.

One thing that may be disappointing is the focus on black and white. Color control is crucial in making color prints and intimately tied with contrast.

The three books in this series can be read independently, but together provide a complete clinic from positioning the camera to displaying a final print.

The Spirit Path
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Leisure Books (March, 1996)
Author: Madeline Baker
Average review score:

Wasn't bad!
The cover is cheesy, and the story-line seems to be much the same to another one of Maddie's books, Feather In the Wind. I was disappointed in the similarities in the heroes and heroines (both women are authors of romance novels, both indian guys end up staying in the future and choose basically the same career path, etc) but Madeline Baker manages to make it a new, fresh spin on things. It was like she took one story and said, "Aha, but what if I do it like this?" And comes out with something that manages to be something old, new, borrowed, and almost blue. ;) I would have probably given this 5 stars were it not for the fact that I read Feather in the Wind first.

Good book tho!

Madeline Baker does it again
"The Spirit Path" is a Historical Romance-meets-the-Present time travel. Madeline Baker weaves this story beautifully! It's about Shadow Hawk, a young Lakota spiritual leader of his People who goes on a vision quest that opens a portal and takes him on a time travel to meet Maggie, the beautiful woman in his dreams. Despite any odds, Shadow Hawk and Maggie discover a shared destiny and will conquer time itself to be together.

A KEEPER!
This story was absoutely captivating. I love the historical, Indian Romance stories, but recently been introduced to the wonderful time travel plots. Madeline does a fine job of creating an astonishing and sensual story highlighted with the beautiful folklore of the Indian culture. This book you will begin and not want it to end. You will find yourself racing through time with the characters in the bold pursuit of captivating fantasy.

Where the Forest Meets the Sea

Where The Forest Meets the Sea
A boy journeys through the rain forest and begins to fantasize about the plants and animals that lived there millions of years ago. At the end of the day, he begins to wonder how it could change in the future.
The forest in this story really exists in Australia. The artist uses relief collages for the illustrations in this book. Many of these "collage constructions" have been exhibited in art galleries around the world. This story makes the reader think about how civilization can affect Mother Nature. Finding the hidden pictures is sure to delight readers of all ages.

A BRILLIANT BOOK ABOUT A VERY SPECIAL PLACE -
.

This is one of Jeannie Baker's early books, first published in 1988. It's good to see that it is still in print.

"Where The Forest Meets the Sea" is truly a work of art. It is an ideal companion to her most recent work "The Hidden Forest". It is fascinating to see how her style and technique has evolved and become increasingly sophisticated over the past 12 years.

Jeannie has an unashamedly environmental message to deliver, with her simple story lines dealing with the fragility of very special, ecologically unique areas. She doesn't push too hard with the rhetoric but lets her beautiful, ultra-lifelike, 3 dimensional images provide the perfect supporting context.

Having recently seen an exhibition of Jeannie's work that provided the images for "Hidden Forest" it is clear that it is the visual power of the images that is the most effective means of convincing people of the value of a particular environment.

In the dark forest scenes there are hidden dinosaurs and aboriginal figures providing a mystical quality to the book. The message that comes through is the timelessness of the natural environment.

We are reminded at the end of the book of the potential for man to radically change the environment for the worse. It takes books like this to provide us with insights and observations that will prevent this from happening.

.

Simply stunning
Jeannie Baker is a collage artist, and has created a beautiful book from a huge array of natural materials. The photographic illustrations of the collages have enormous texture.

An Honour Book in the Australian Children's Picture Book of the Year awards. It conveys a message of the need to care for the natural environment, and warns against the over-development of wilderness areas. Raises important issues in the most exquisite way.

Well-loved by children, and deserving of a place in every school, public and home library.

A beautiful depiction of an exquisite wilderness, the Daintree Rainforest of far north Queensland.

Also recommended for older children and adults who enjoy and appreciate innovative illustration and the art of children's books.

The Will and the Way (Ad&D, 2nd Edition)

The Will is the only Way!
I have been gaming for about eight years now, and have played almost every class available. I was leary about playing psionists until I read this book, and let me tell you it changed my mind completely. This book not only brings to the forefront a class that should, by all rights, have few equals, it also delves into many areas that allow one character to stand out more from the rest of a party. Anybody can play thieves and fighters, and logical people can make a cleric or mage useful, but making a psion a strength to a group while not completely destroying the cohesiveness of the group is the key to gaming. This book allows a psion to be strong with out overpowering the rest of a party. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is willing to allow psions in their campaign.

The TRUE Psionics Handbook.....
This is a definite must have for any AD&D gamer who is considering allowing the art of Psionics into their campaign. The powers and proficiencies found within truely set the Psionicist class where they should be on the power scale.

This book is where Psionics gets serious
For those who really want to delve into psionics this book is a must. It clears up most of the confusion that one might feel after reading the Psionics handbook. Expanded rules and examples of empored items, a ton of great new powers, sample NPCs, and a bunch of other cool stuff including High Sciences! The rules that this book sets out for psionic research and improvement are yet another great addition to the Psionicist class. Forget all those stacks of mage books and just get this one. Between this and the psionics players handbook you'll have everything you need.
